Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is the most important square in Florence. It is located between Piazza del Duomo and the Arno river. During the Roman Empire, the square was equipped with thermal facilities. At the beginning of the Middle Ages the baths disappeared and the square was occupied gradually by craftsmen. The Piazza della Signoria adopted its present form in the 13th century and was paved at the end of the 14th century. It has always been closely linked to civil power.
